V&A Pocket Diary 2022: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Author(s): V&A

Stationery, Cards & Bookmarks

The Hatter was the first to break the silence. 'What day of the month is it?' he said, turning to Alice: he had taken his watch out of his pocket, and was looking at it uneasily, shaking it every now and then, and holding it to his ear.

Alice considered a little, and then said 'The fourth.'

'Two days wrong!' sighed the Hatter

This witty and appealing pocket diary for 2022 pairs illustrations from Lewis Carroll's much-loved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with objects from the rich collections of the V&A.

Victorian author Lewis Carroll had originally drawn his own illustrations for the first 'Alice' manuscript, but recognized the need to engage a professional artist, John Tenniel, for the published version. Carroll's text was often light on description, and Tenniel invented his own characterizations, drawing from a vast range of sources, including fine art, natural history, heraldry and caricature. Once committed to paper, the illustrations were carved into woodblocks by engravers, and electrotype copies made to be used by the publishers, Macmillan, for printing. The National Art Library at the V&A holds a copy from the year of first publication, 1866.

Plan your days alongside these iconic images and the wonderful selection of jewellery, prints, textiles, ceramics, glass and silverware from the V&A.
